This was a Shiba Inu I had and she was helping 2 female goats clean off a new baby!

I had an LGD at only 6-8 months old start watching the skies when hawks or ravens would fly over. I noticed she perfected this trait when 10 months. She will tip toe through the grass when checking her chicks. Presumably so as to not step on them. She also lived in the pasture with my free range Californian meat rabbits. I am SO impressed at the work ethic of her and how young she settled into it. All business. Amazing dog. And SHE IS WHAT BEING A LGD IS ALL ABOUT. A person should not have to wait unil the LGD is two years old to start working.

When searching for an LGD please remember that puppies may be cheaper, but then you have to raise it, put a few hundred dollars of dog food into it before months later it starts to work for you. Young adults well started by a trusted person may be your best bet. Instant working dog.

With that said, I don't raise them now.

I would like to clarify something. "The ethical breeder"

The misinformation and drama caused by some people directly harm those who don't deserve it. I am referring to the breeding and raising of dogs as well as to the disease tests and vaccinations for many animals including dogs and goats. A responsible breeder is NOT responsible for a buyer's ignorance and is not responsbile for controlling the lives of the buyers. It is not the fault of breeders that the rescues have many dogs. It is the fault of the buyers.Breeders can't be responsible for irresponsible buyers or the fate in the buyer's lives. The rescue facilities in fact want dogs, because they are making money off of it and accepting many dollars in donations. And why is it ok to raise cattle, pigs, horses, fish, birds, flying squirrels, alpacas and more? Yet to raise dogs to make money and pay your electric bill, the breeder is bashed. Use common sense folks. And just what really is a 'back yard breeder'? Someone who doesn't do it in their front yard? It is such a ridiculous title. I'd rather buy from a home with a back yard than a kennel yard. If you have ever purchased a kennel raised puppy, you may know what I mean. Just because someone may raise some puppies, it does NOT mean they are a puppy mill. And from who do you expect someone to buy their purebred dog? Immaculate conception? How about ethical breeders? Just why do others think they can define what an ethical breeder is? Those who test and do x rays can be 'ethical', but they may feed their dogs a corn based man made diet or perhaps they allow their dogs to become obese. How is that ethical? They may also say an ethical breeder allows the potential buyer free range of the breeder's property so to speak. This is my place; it is not a zoo. I don't charge for admission and I care enough about my animals to keep visitors at a minimum. To use the new aged farming term; 'biosecurity' is important to me as well as protecting my animals from the stress of perhaps someone they sense is not a good person to have here. I also have an issue with those telling me how to manage any of my animals. This is my place and I have my own way of managing it to keep my animals healthy and well taken care of. If it is not the same as the way you do it, it doesn't mean I am wrong and you are right. There is no doubt that some people raise animals and do not know what they are doing. That is not me. I also refuse to interrogate buyers of my animals as it is out of my control what the future of their life is. Anyone can pass away, get divorced, or not train an animal correctly and it is none of my business to control that. So once you purchase an animal from me, it is entirely your responsibility from there on out. I want to help and DO help buyers if they request it. I've dehorned or castrated even those goats who were not purchased from me for no charge. I am willing to help, I just don't control the lives of others. This is a working farm and money does not grow on my trees. Do not chastise me for raising animals.

You may buy a puppy or goat from a breeder who does all kinds of reactive testing to supposedly eliminate all potential for disease or you can buy from a breeder who is proactive and takes care of the animal as it should be taken care of in the first place.

I notice that many people want dogs to be tested for many issues before they buy puppies. These are dogs people. Who are you to be so picky about perfection and then turn around and feed the animals a diet made by man with grains in it? Or have had children yourself and you and your partner didn't get tested, vaccinated yearly and had xrays done beforehand? Also, I know a person who vaccinates his puppies diligently and had parvo develop in 17 puppies! So did vaccinating help or not? I know of a Bernese who upon x ray for OFA had severe enough hip dysplasia as to not 'qualify' for a score, but she lived far past ten years with NO signs of it.

Goat herds tested negative are not necessarily clean of diseases nor are they negative for lice, mites, hoof rot, worms, other health issues, or zinc, selenium, cobalt or copper deficient. And herds tested positive can be false positive and be very healthy without any of the above issues. Stress of heat cycles, vaccinating for said disease (!!), moving them, animosity in the herd and more can cause false positives. Any test result can be influenced by the vaccine antibodies! And even worse for the paranoid is that one does not have to have clean tested herds when they take their goats to the National show. The biggest show ever and the most expensive top quality goats do not have to be tested for diseases!

We all go to see friends, fairs, goat shows, feed stores and even grocery stores where other goat people shop. And it makes no sense that people don’t worry about having to test more often than this standard new rule of once a year or so. How any herds ever test negative under all these circumstances is beyond me.

Information and proof is everywhere concerning safety or lack thereof of vaccines as well as false test results for diseases.  I wanted to start posting just a few articles regarding such information below. I’ve personally witnessed lumps left under the skin of goats for years after vaccines. That can’t be good. Stressing my goats with blood draws and more is not what I want to do. I’d rather just keep them healthy. I have seen CAE, CL, Johnes free herds only to see that they are mineral deficient, lice infested, fat from grain and more. I just can’t understand the thought process of thinking that if your herd tests free of disease that it is any better than any other herd. I am not a member of "the disease of the month club", to quote a goat judge whose name will remain anonymous.

So for those of you who will try to chastise me if I don't test for this or that, first I want to ask you; Do you have any physical or mental flaws? Did you have xrays? Do you have children who have physical or mental flaws? Have you been tested for diseases? How is your diet? How is the diet of your animals?  Did YOU procreate without being tested?
